Gallery Hyundai New York Project Space is pleased to present The Absent One (March 12–April 25, 2026), a group exhibition bringing together an intergenerational group of Korean and Korean diasporic artists whose works revise the notion of inheritance not as something that is passed down but planted as a seed. And like seeds, it is not a given that they will grow, but requires ritual, care, and a balance between agency and withdrawal. For some artists, these seeds are experienced as absence, causing memories of one’s homeland and its traditions to be experienced as fugitive, while the one who longs for it constructs language in order to create rhythm and shape to their waiting. Whether it is through objects such as the Moon Jar, contours of Korea’s hilltops, folktales, or an amalgamation of sensations, materials, and people, in the works by Ik-Joong Kang, Minjung Kim, Seulgi Lee, and Choong Sup Lim, ideas and memories of the homeland are invoked. Therefore, the figure of the mother, ideas of non-patriarchal lineage, and nonbiological forms of kinship are a specter throughout this show.

갤러리현대 뉴욕 프로젝트 스페이스는 오는 3월 12일부터 4월 25일까지 기획전 《빈 자리》를 개최한다. 이번 전시는 다양한 세대의 한국 기반 작가 및 한국 디아스포라 작가들을 소개하며, ‘상속’을 단순히 전해지는 유산이 아니라 씨앗처럼 심고 자라나는 과정으로 바라보는 데서 출발한다. 상속된 유산이 자라나기 위해서는 의례, 돌봄, 그리고 자의식과 내어줌 사이의 균형이 필요하다. 일부 작가들은 이러한 씨앗을 부재로 경험하며, 모국의 기억과 전통을 방랑하는 존재로 인식하기도 한다. 그리움을 지닌 개인은 기다림의 시간에 대해 리듬과 형태를 부여하기 위해 자신만의 언어를 창조한다. 예컨대 강익중, 김민정, 이슬기, 임충섭은 달항아리 같은 물체나 한국 특유의 능선과 그에 깃든 설화, 감각과 물질, 인간의 총체를 통해 모국의 개념과 기억을 호출하고 독자적인 작업 세계를 구축해 왔다. 이와 같이, 《빈 자리》는 어머니라는 존재와 비가부장적 계보, 그리고 생물학적 경계를 넘어선 연대의 울림을 선보이는 자리이다.
