Seulgi Lee (b. 1972) was born in Korea but has moved to Paris over twenty years ago.  She has consistently endeavored to make a strong investigation into a physical language of forms that recalls something folkloric but is utterly contemporary in her translation. Lee’s unique artistic practice are immediately recognizable for its use of color, gesture, simple yet elegant forms, and performance. In spite of (or perhaps linked to) its deference to bright, cheerful color, Lee has described her sculptural practice as utilitarian, invariably related to the power, fragility, and contingency of the body: her works are tools, to be available at-hand, used by those who are nearby. 

Collaborating with master nubi artisans from Tongyeong, a port in the South Korea, where the technique has been well developed for hundreds of years, Lee started her recent Blanket Project U started in 2014. In the Basket Project U, Lee produced the works in association with female basket weavers in Mexica, Oaxaca, while became aware of a disappearing language, Ixcateco. Here, Lee engaged the proverbs or shamanism that reflects wisdom of certain communities into everyday objects. The works caught the eye of the creative directors of the fashion house Hermes leading to collaborations on limited edition blankets telling the story of proverbs which, in turn, led to further blanket projects with IKEA in 2019.

Lee studied at the École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris and has participated in numerous exhibitions including a solo exhibition at La Criee Centre D’Art Contemporain in Rennes, Burning Down The House (Gwangju Biennale, 2014), Intense Proximity (La Triennial, Palais de Tokyo, 2012), Evento (Biennale de Bordeaux, 2009), Annual Report (Gwangju Biennale, 2007) amongst others. She recently served as resident artist at the L’Appartement 22 culture centre in Rabat, Morocco in 2019. She has been chosen to participate in the prestigious Korean Artist Prize held at the MMCA 2020. 

이슬기는 재치있는 시선으로 기하학적 패턴과 선명한 색을 사용하여, 일상의 오브제를 예술작품으로 탈바꿈시킨다. 그는 다양한 소재를 사용하여 민속적인 요소를 상기시키는 동시에 현대성을 반영한 물질적 조형 언어를 꾸준히 선보였다. 더불어 공예적 어휘를 사용하여 조각의 언어와 대중적 디자인, 공예 미학 사이의 경계를 무너뜨리기도 했다. 2014년에 작가가 시작한 <이불프로젝트: U>는 통영누빔이불 장인과 함께 협업한 것이고, <바구니프로젝트: W>는 멕시코 오악사카 지역 장인들과 협업한 프로젝트로, 이슬기는 한 공동체 삶의 지혜가 담긴 속담이나 주술 문화를 일상 사물에 접목한 작업을 소개했다. 이슬기의 작품은 우리 눈 앞에 놓인 현실과 신화, 설화, 또는 속담 등에서 만들어진 또 다른 세계를 연결 짓는 매개체가 되어 일상 속에서 잊고 있는 것들을 소환하고 다시 성찰할 수 있는 계기를 마련한다.

이슬기는 서울에서 태어나 파리 국립고등미술학교에서 수학했고, 1992년부터 파리에서 거주하며 활동 하고 있다. 이슬기는 「터전을 불태우라」(광주비엔날레, 2014), 「강렬한 근접 (보르도비엔날레, 2009), 「연례보고」 (광주비엔날레, 2007) 등 주요 국제 전시에도 참여했다. 2001년부터 2003년까지는 작가가 직접 대안공간 파리 프로젝트룸(Paris Project Room)을 설립하고 운영하기도 했다. 최근에는 패션 브랜드 에르메스(Hermes)와 함께 캐시미어 퀼트 콜라보레이션 작업을 진행했다. 또 가구 전문 브랜드 이케아(IKEA)와 함께 아트 러그 프로젝트를 진행했고, 여기서 제작된 러그는 2019년 봄에 일반 소비자들에게 판매되기도 했다.
