François Morellet (1926-2016) is widely recognized as a key figure in the development of geometrical abstract art. Morellet began to make work in the mid-1940s and co-founded GRAV (Groupe de Recherche d'Art Visuel, 1961-1968). Early on his career, Morellet began immersing himself in abstract art based on a pictorial language of simple geometric elements such as lines and squares. At the same time, he actively embraced industrial materials including neon tubes, iron, and adhesive tape, thus negating the notion of an artist as a creative genius. Randomness, accidental choice, wordplay, and audience participation contributed to the establishment of the artist’s unique aesthetic and practice.
Dia Art Foundation hosted a posthumous retrospective exhibition of the artist in 2017. His works are including in prestigious collections worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Tate, Centre Pompidou, Stedelijk Museum, Le Consortium, LACMA, Seoul Museum of Art, and the Ho-Am Art Museum.

기하학적 추상미술의 대가로 평가 받는 프랑수아 모를레는 네온, 혹은 기하학적 선을 사용하여 공간을 재구성하는 작업으로 널리 알려져 있다. 모를레의 작품은 반세기에 걸쳐, 미니멀 아트와 구상 미술의역사에 중요한 획을 그었다. 1950년대부터 선, 정사각형 등의 기하학적으로 가장 단순한 요소들에 바탕을 둔 추상미술에 몰두하기 시작한 프랑수아 모를레는 그 활동의 초기부터 예술가 개인의 천재성과 창조성을 거부하며 작가적 주관의 개입을 최소화하는 작업 방식을 고수하였다. 동시에 네온, 철, 테이프 등의 공업재료를 적극적으로 이용하는 방법들을 발전시켜 나갔으며, 여기에 무작위, 우연적 선택, 언어 유희, 관객 참여 등의 요소가 더해지며 그만의 독특한 미학과 작품 세계가 정립되었다.

1926년 프랑스 숄레(Cholet)에서 태어난 프랑수아 모를레는 전후 미술사에 커다란 족적을 남기고 2016년 5월 10일 영면에 들었다. 모를레의 작품은 독일, 프랑스, 영국, 미국 등 전 세계에 걸쳐 전시되었고 2017년에는 프랑스 거장의 삶과 정신을 기리고자 뉴욕의 디아미술재단(Dia Art Foundation)에서 대규모 회고전이 개최되었다. 모를레의 작품은 뉴욕현대미술관, 테이트, 퐁피두센터, 암스테르담현대미술관, 르 콩소시움, 로스앤젤레스카운티미술관, 서울시립미술관, 호암미술관 등 세계 유수의 기관에 소장되어있다.
