Yun-Hee Toh’s (b. 1961) examination of the hidden beauty of the unfamiliar fragments of life and the unrevealed parts of phenomena have driven her artistic practice for the past thirty years. Her work has been connected to intrinsic qualities of individuals in their everyday lives and her paintings are relative to private confessions of the human existence on the things that cannot be seen but felt. Extracted from the core of the prosaic everyday life is a poetry that ponders upon fundamental questions on reality and existence.

Delicately composed line drawings are interwoven with oil paint rendered in dripping technique while the sense of depth is created by pencil drawings and multiple layers of varnish built upon each other resulting in unexpected outcomes. Such layering attempts to capture the instantaneous moment in relation to concepts of eternity. Through her organic subjects of water, sunlight, ice, honey, and dust, her work embodies the emotional and metaphoric depiction that is the façade of our lives or the original landscape of nature. Whereas serenity prevails on the surface, the inner content of her works reveal the pursuit of abounding ideas.

Toh has shown at the Galerie Beyeler in Basel, the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Seoul Museum of Art, Sungkok Art Museum, Kumho Museum of Art, Art Sonje, Amore Pacific Campus and OCI Museum amongst others.

Her works are in the public collections of, among others, the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art Korea, Seoul Museum of Art, World Bank, Washington DC, Philip Morris Art Collection, Art Sonje Seoul, Ilmin Museum Seoul, Kumho Museum, Sungok Museum Seoul, Kloster Schonthal Switzerland, and the University of Illinois Chicago.

도윤희는 현상 배후에 숨겨져 있는 아름다움을 탐구하고, 보이지 않지만 느낄 수 있는 것들을 깊이 있게 포착해낸다. 작가는 현대인들의 무미건조한 삶의 내면에 숨겨져 있는 시적인 부분을 표면으로 끌어내어 현실과 존재에 대해 성찰한다. 그녀의 초기 작품은 선묘의 섬세한 구성과 유화의 드리핑으로 인한 우연한 효과를 동시에 추구하며, 연필로 촘촘히 캔버스를 메우고 바니쉬로 마감하는 과정의 축적으로 화면의 깊이를 더한다. 작가는 이러한 작업을 통해 현재성을 영원의 이면으로 포착하고자 한다. 작가는 물, 햇빛, 얼음, 꿀과 먼지 등을 소재로 시간과 기억, 그리고 삶의 양상들을 포괄적으로 다루며 작가가 느끼는 감정과 우리의 삶을 은유적으로 담아낸다. 표면적으로 평온해 보이는 작업이면에는 쉼 없이 흐르고 있는 생각과 관념들이 담겨있다.

그녀의 최근작인 Night Blossom 시리즈는 각각은 ‘어둠 속에서 빛을 발하기 시작하는 색채’, ‘밤이 되어서야 드러나는 세계’에 대한 작가적 고뇌와 탐구의 결정체이다. 이 시리즈의 가장 큰 특징 중 하나는 작가가 기존에 즐겨 사용해온 연필과 붓을 버리고 오로지 ‘손’만으로 작업을 하였다는 점이다. 오랜 시간이 필요한 연필 드로잉 과정에서 작품에 대한 최초의 영감으로부터 조금씩 멀어지는 듯한 불만을 해소하고자, 작가는 연필과 붓이라는 도구로부터 벗어나 자신의 손을 이용해 더욱 직접적이고 정확하게 자신의 생각을 캔버스로 옮기고자 하였다. 이와 함께 그녀는 자신의 작업에서 한동안 억제되어 왔던 색채를 다시금 받아들였다. 미세한 감각들이 포착한 하나 하나의 예술적 충동과 욕망을 고스란히 캔버스 화면 위로 옮기고자 하는 태도였다.

도윤희는 1961년 서울 태생으로, 1985년 첫 개인전 이후 꾸준히 회화 작업에 매진하며 갤러리 바이엘러(바젤, 스위스), 갤러리현대(서울), 금호미술관(서울), 몽인아트센터(서울), 아르테미시아 갤러리(시카고, 미국) 등에서 개인전을 개최하였고, 국립현대미술관(서울), 서울시립미술관(서울), 세계은행 컬렉션, 필립 모리스 컬렉션 등 국내외 유수의 기관에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
