Park Minjoon has been researching and inheriting universal narratives and magical effects of representation bestowed by classical painting through the language of contemporary painting. His major philosophical themes include life and death of human beings and the dreams and ideals that transcend them, as well as the creative greatness and value of art. In the early stages of his career, the artist transferred Western mythological figures such as Icarus, Sirens, and Dafne onto the guise of East Asian people, presenting reinterpretations of masterpieces of Renaissance and Classical Art formative to the canon of Art History. His unique works that espouse both classical grace and surreal uncanniness gained appreciation and solid fanbases in the art world both Korean and abroad. 

In the mid-2010s, the artist departed from taking Western mythology as thematic material, instead constructing original narrative worlds through his own novels Rappore Circus and Two Flags. Since then, he has been experimenting with “representing” the figures and events of the novels into drawings, paintings, sculptures, and other various media.

Magical realism is reinforced where written descriptions of the characters’ personalities, appearance, and secret backstories are realized in a colorful palette, bold compositions, and detailed images. In other words, the reality consists not of reproducing what already exists in reality, but a new plane of reality achieved by imbuing the artist’s own imagination to scenes that may occur in real life. Furthermore, the artist experiments with interrelationships between novel(text) - author(artist) - painting(image) by positing that the protagonist Rapu is the one painting other members of Rappore circus,  which leads to an expressive mode distinct from other works within the same series. 

X is a broad overview of Park Minjoon’s narratives containing mythological archetypes, iconographies exuding classical beauty, conceptual devices in constructing artworks, and scrupulous methodology. The title “X”, much like symbolic codes strewn throughout Park’s works, leaves room for multiple layers of interpretation. X refers to 10 in Roman numerals, commemorating the artist’s tenth solo exhibition — at the same time, it more generally refers to Park Minjoons’ process of worldbuilding which bridges unexplored potentialities within abstract symbols with his past and new series in a kind of collaborative connection. 

X features approximately forty paintings, sculptures, and drawings by Park Minjoon. Rappore Circus recounts the strange tales of the members of the Rappore Circus, centering on the genius acrobat Rapo and his ordinary younger brother Rapu, while Two Flags traces the veiled last paintings of Sapier, an artist active six centuries ago, through the eyes of art historian Alizarin. Also included in the exhibition are X, which encapsulates both aforementioned series while also altering the form and composition of still life and landscape genres, and the Commedia dell’Arte series, reinterpreted portraits of characters from improvisational plays that were popular in 16th–18th Century Italy. The exhibition also introduces the artist’s two published novels Rappore Circus (2018) and Two Flags (2020), the new English version of Rappore Circus, and monologues of the novels’ main characters also written by the artist, yielding various angles on the relationship between image and text which forms the core of Park Minjoon’s oeuvre. 

As such, through 40-or-so paintings, sculptures, drawings, novels, and lines composed by the artist that overview a novel perspective on the inner lives of human beings, X will provide a comprehensive précis of Park Minjoon’s extensive oeuvre where different series overlap and expand. 

박민준은 전통적인 고전 회화가 전하는 보편적 서사와 재현의 마술적 효과를 동시대 회화 언어로 연구 및 계승하는 작업을 전개해 오고 있다. 인간의 삶과 죽음, 그를 초월한 꿈과 이상, 예술의 창조적 위대함과 가치 등이 그가 몰입해 온 철학적 주제다. 활동 초기, 작가는 이카루스, 사이렌, 다프네 등 서구 신화 속 인물을 동양인의 모습으로 옮기고, 미술사의 고전이 된 르네상스와 고전주의 걸작을 재해석한 작품을 발표했다. 고전적 우아함과 초현실적 생경함을 동시에 간직한 그의 독창적 작품은 국내외 미술계에서 주목받으며 두터운 팬층을 확보해 갔다. 

2010년대 중반, 작가는 서구 신화를 작품의 테마로 삼는 방식에서 벗어나, 소설 『라포르 서커스』와 『두 개의 깃발』을 집필해 자신만의 서사 세계를 구축한다. 이후 소설에 등장하는 인물과 사건 등을 드로잉, 회화, 조각 등의 다양한 매체로 ‘재현’하는 실험을 지속 중이다. 

글로 묘사된 캐릭터의 성격과 생김새, 그들의 비밀스러운 사연 등이 화려한 색감과 과감한 구도, 섬세한 이미지로 구현되자 소설의 것과는 다른 ‘마술적 리얼리티’ 효과가 강조되었다. 현실에 있는 것을 그대로 재연하는 리얼리티가 아닌, 현실에 있을 법한 장면에 작가의 상상력을 불어넣은 새로운 리얼리티가 확보되는 순간이었다. 또한 작가는 소설 속 주인공인 ‘라푸가 라포르 서커스단의 모습을 그린다’는 상황 설정을 통해 동일한 연작 내에서 다른 표현 양식을 시도하며, 소설(텍스트)-작가(예술가)-회화(이미지)의 상호관계성을 실험한다. 

《X》는 박민준 작가가 집필한 신화적 원형성을 품은 서사와 고전적 아름다움을 지닌 도상, 작품 제작의 개념적 장치와 치밀한 방법론을 종합적으로 조망하는 전시다. 타이틀 ‘X’는 그의 작품 곳곳에 배치된 상징 코드와 마찬가지로 다층적인 해석의 여지를 남긴다. X는 로마자로 숫자 10을 의미하며, 작가의 열 번째 개인전을 기념하고, 추상화된 기호가 내포한 미지의 가능성, 작가의 과거 연작과 새로운 연작이 ‘컬래버레이션’ 하듯 연결되어 박민준만의 세계관을 형성하는 전 과정을 폭넓게 지시한다. 

《X》전에는 박민준의 회화 및 조각, 드로잉 40여 점을 대거 선보인다. 천재 곡예사인 형 라포와 평범한 동생 라푸의 이야기를 중심으로 라포르 서커스 단원들의 별난 사연을 담은 <라포르 서커스(Rapport Circus)>, 미술사학자 알리자린이 600여 년 전 활동한 화가 사피에르의 베일에 싸인 최후의 작품을 추적하는 <두 개의 깃발(Two Flags)>, 두 연작을 포용하는 동시에 정물화와 풍경화의 형식과 조형성을 변주한 <X>, 16-18세기 이탈리아에서 유행한 즉흥극에 등장하는 캐릭터를 초상화의 장르로 재해석한 <콤메디아 델라르테(Commedia dell’Arte)> 연작이 전격 공개된다. 또한 작가가 집필한 두 편의 국문 소설 『라포르 서커스』(2018)와 『두 개의 깃발』(2020), 새로 발간된 『라포르 서커스』의 영문판과 작품 속 캐릭터에 맞춰 작가가 쓴 모놀로그 등을 함께 공개해, 박민준 작품 세계의 중심축을 이루는 ‘이미지’와 ‘텍스트’의 관계를 다각도로 살핀다. 

《X》는 인간 삶의 내밀한 풍경을 새로운 시각에서 바라보는 박민준의 회화와 조각, 드로잉 등 40여 점과 작가가 집필한 소설과 대사를 통해, 서로 다른 연작이 중첩되며 확장되는 그의 광범위한 작품 세계를 총체적으로 살펴보는 자리가 될 것이다.
