Gallery Hyundai presents Chung Sang-Hwa’s solo exhibition Infinite Breath from June 1 through July 16. Infinite Breath marks the ninth solo exhibition co-presented by Chung Sang-Hwa and Gallery Hyundai. Gallery Hyundai has represented Chung Sang-Hwa since his first exhibition in 1983, after being drawn to the artist’s singular practice while he was working in Paris. Since then, the gallery has introduced Chung’s artistic practice to audiences in Korea and abroad for four decades leading up to the present. This exhibition is the first to be held at Gallery Hyundai in the last ten years since 2014 and highlights varied articulations of the artist’s unique grid and his spirit of formal inquiry realized through experimentations with medium. It accordingly features approximately forty pieces spanning from the 1970s to recent years that exemplify Chung’s unique expressive methodology. 

A leading figure of Korean contemporary art, Chung Sang-Hwa earned international acclaim for poetic works examining a new dimension of flatness through his unique processes of peeling off and filling in. The title of the exhibition Infinite Breath metaphorizes the artist’s worldview that aspires for the surface of paintings, touched by the artist’s own breath, to expand towards infinite time and space beyond canvas. Through a physically and psychologically labor-intensive procedure, he has been expanding two-dimensional surfaces into living, breathing spaces. The artist therefore visualizes his own intensive process of completing a work that demands immense focus at every moment. In his essay from 1980, art critic Lee Yil described Chung Sang-Hwa’s works as “spaces for clandestine whispers.” He stated: “Chung Sang-Hwa’s paintings are not something by nature that can be easily approached. It would be easy to overlook them as expressionless, unremarkable pictures. But once one takes the time to appreciate, his paintings emanate a breath with depths incomparable to those striving to delight the eye. When squares stack and adjoin densely yet harmonize as a whole, they infinitely proliferate into spaces for clandestine whispers.” (Lee Yil, “Space for Holding the Breath,” 1980) 

As such, the décollage, frottage, and woodcut works featured in this exhibition closely converge at Chung Sang-Hwa’s characteristic experimentalism that pursues momentary and spontaneous expression, formal investigation of material and subject, and other experimental modes of expression. For the artist, works on paper are not simply translations of oil painting into paper but a search for methodological experimentation and provocation that utilize the flexibility and readiness of paper as medium. 

갤러리현대는 정상화의 개인전 《무한한 숨결》을 6월 1일부터 7월 16일까지 개최한다. 《무한한 숨결》 전은 정상화 작가와 갤러리현대가 함께하는 아홉 번째 개인전이다. 갤러리현대는 파리에서 활동 중이던 그의 예술성에 반해 1983년 첫 개최한 이후 현재까지 40여 년간 그의 예술 세계를 국내외 무대에 알려 왔다. 2014년 이후 10여 년 만에 개최되는 갤러리현대 전시는 1970년대 이후 전개된 그의 독창적 그리드의 다양성을 주목하고, 매체 실험을 통한 작가의 조형적 탐구 정신을 재조명하기 위해 기획되었다. 정상화 작가의 독보적인 표현 양식을 살펴볼 수 있는 1970년대 작품부터 근작까지 40여 점이 대거 소개된다.

한국 현대미술의 거장인 정상화는 ‘뜯어내기’와 ‘메우기’라는 자신만의 독창적 프로세스로 새로운 차원의 평면성을 탐구하는 시적인 작품을 발표하며 국제적 명성을 얻었다. 전시 제목 《무한한 숨결》은 작가의 모든 숨결이 닿은 캔버스 화면이 화폭 너머의 무한한 시공간으로 확장되길 바라는  정상화 작가의 세계관을 은유한다. 그는 신체적, 정신적 노동이 집약된 방법을 통해 2차원 평면을 숨결이 존재하는 공간으로 확장해 왔다. 작가는 매 순간 엄청난 집중력으로 화면에 몰입하며 완성한 과정을 시각화하였다. 미술평론가 이일은 1980년 발표한 글에서 정상화의 작품을 “은밀한 숨결의 공간”이라 평하였다. “정상화의 회화는 쉽게 접근할 수 있는 성질의 것이 아니다. 자칫 표정 없는 밋밋한 그림으로 그냥 지나쳐 버릴 수도 있는 그러한 작품들이다. 그러나 시간과 음미를 일단 거치고 나면 눈요기의 시각적 효과를 겨냥한 그림보다 비길 수 없이 깊은 숨결을 내뿜고 있는 것이 또한 그의 그림이다. 그의 회화는 네모꼴들이 빡빡하게 쌓이고 서로 인접하면서도 그 전체가 한데 어울려 무한히 확산해 가는 은밀한 숨결의 공간이라 할 수 있을 것이다.” (이 일, <은밀한 숨결의 공간>, 1980) 

이번 전시에 소개되는 데콜라주, 프로타주, 목판 작품들은 순간적이고 즉흥적인 표현, 재료와 대상에 대한 조형성 탐구, 표현의 실험적 시도를 추구한 결과로 작가의 실험 정신에 가장 근접한 작품들이다. 정상화에게 종이 작업은 유화 작업을 종이로 옮겨 제작한다는 단순한 차원이 아니라, 종이라는 매체의 유연하고 손쉬운 특성을 이용하여 방법적 실험과 도전을 감행하고 방향을 모색한다는 의미를 지닌다.
