Lee Ufan (b.1936) came to prominence in the early 1960s as one of the pioneers and major proponents of the avant-garde Mono-ha (Object School) group. This movement challenged the Western notions of representation and focused rather on the relationships of materials and perceptions in contrast to expressionist tendencies. The artist’s practice often entails direct and thoughtful iterations of gestures and the use of minimally manipulated physical materials. His painting series demonstrate minimal aesthetics through consistent pattern or order while highlighting the relationship between brushstroke, material and the canvas. His sculptural series Relatum, comprised of one or more light-hued stones and rectangular iron plates, is equally minimal. The dialectical relationship between brushstrokes and canvas is also reflected in the relationship between stone and iron plate.

Lee has held major solo exhibitions at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York (2011), Château de Versailles, Paris (2014), Serpentine Gallery, London (2018), Centre Pompidou-Metz, Metz (2019), Dia:Beacon, Beacon, NY (2019), and Hirshhorn Museum Sculpture Garden (2019) amongst many others. His work is collected by renown international institutions such as the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Seoul; Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, Tokyo; National Museum of Art, Osaka; the Brooklyn Museum, Brooklyn, NY; Centre Georges Pompidou, Paris; and Tate Modern, London.

이우환 작가는 일찍이 1960년대 후반 일본에서 미술평론가로 등단하여 당시의 모노하(物派) 태동을 주도하였다. 모노하 운동은 서양 미술사적 묘사가 아닌 작품의 재료와 이를 느끼는 지각의 관계에 집중하였다. 작가의 작업은 대개 직접적이면서도 세심한 제스쳐의 반복과 거의 가공되지 않은 재료를 수반한다. 그는 일정한 패턴이나 질서를 유지하면서 미니멀한 회화 작품을 통해 붓의 제스쳐와 캔버스의 관계를 강조하여 나타낸다. 돌과 철판으로 구성된 그의 조각작품 시리즈 <관계항> 역시 미니멀한 미학을 보여준다. 그의 회화 작품이 담고있는 붓터치와 캔버스 사이의 변증적인 관계는 이러한 조각작품에도 반영되어 있다.

2011년 6월 뉴욕 구겐하임 미술관에서 대규모 개인전을 성황리에 개최하였고, 그 외 2014년 파리 베르사유 궁전, 2018년 런던 서펜타인 새클러 갤러리, 2019년 프랑스 메츠 퐁피두 메츠 센터와 미국 뉴욕주 비컨의 디아 비컨과 같은 해외 주요 미술관에서 꾸준히 개인전을 개최하고 있다. 그의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 도쿄도 현대미술관, 오사카 국립국제미술관, 뉴욕 브루클린 뮤지엄, 파리 조르주 퐁피두 센터, 런던 테이트모던 등 수많은 국내 및 해외 주요 기관에 소장되어 있다.
