Choi Minhwa will participate in the group exhibition A Rose is a Rose is a Rose is a Rose, held from April 10 to May 25, 2025, at XLARGE gallery, a home-based gallery situated in the residential neighborhood of Gahoe-dong, Jongno-gu. Accessible by advance reservation, x large gallery offers an intimate exhibition setting within a lived-in space. The exhibition title draws from a poem by Gertrude Stein, often interpreted as “things are what they are” or “A is A,” referencing the poet’s notion that even without embellishment, a name alone can evoke powerful imagery and emotion. In this spirit, the exhibition invites viewers to consider each artwork as a rose—an object of contemplation, emotion, and layered meaning.
Choi Minhwa presents three paintings from his Jeokchun (passionate youth) series, a body of work in which the artist, reflecting from midlife, revisits the theme of love between men and women. 최민화가 2025년 4월 10일부터 5월 25일까지 개최되는 엑스라지 그룹전 《장미는 장미는 장미는 장미는(A Rose is a Rose is a Rose is a Rose)》에 참여한다. 엑스라지는 종로구 가회동 주택가에 위치한, 사전 예약을 통해서 입장이 가능한 생활 공간형 갤러리이다. 전시 제목은 거트루드 스타인(Gertrude Stein) 시구에서 착안한 것으로, 보통 “사물은 있는 그대로의 모습”, “A는 A다”와 같은 의미로 해석되며, 과한 수사가 없더라도 사물의 이름 그 자체만으로 이미지와 감정을 불러일으킨다고 표현한 작가의 말을 은유한다. 이러한 맥락에서 이번 전시는 하나의 작품을 한 송이 꽃이라 생각해 보면 어떨지 제안한다.
최민화는 이번 전시에 중년의 작가가 남녀 간의 사랑을 회상하는 ‘적춘’ 시리즈 3점을 선보인다. 해당 연작은 남녀가 경험하는 순수한 사랑부터 성적 환상까지, 감정의 스펙트럼을 섬세하게 포착하고 화면에 담아낸다.
