Park Minjoon’s solo exhibition, MYŌ, will be held at Tokyo Gallery+BTAP, Japan, from March 1 to April 5, 2025. Park Minjoon has been presenting distinctive works that capture his unique fictional worlds through reinterpretations of classical paintings. Tokyo Gallery+BTAP, founded in 1948 as Japan’s first contemporary art gallery, has introduced modern Asian artists from Korea, China, and Japan through its galleries in Tokyo and Beijing. The exhibition features fifteen new works that explore the sense of myō—a mysterious, uncanny sensation that emerges when unreal, imagined forms distinguish themselves from reality.

Park has been researching and inheriting universal narratives and the magical effects of representation conveyed by classical painting, translating them into the language of contemporary painting. In his early works, he transposed figures from Western mythology—such as Icarus, the Sirens, and Daphne—into East Asian appearances while reinterpreting Renaissance and Neoclassical art history masterpieces. From the mid-2010s, he moved away from direct mythological references to construct his narrative worlds, examining the multifaceted relationship between image and text through series such as Rapport Circus, Two Flags, X, and Commedia dell’Arte. His work delves into philosophical themes such as life and death, dreams and reality, and the grandeur and value of artistic creation. His works, born from the close relationship between painting and novel, preserve a mystical atmosphere, guiding us to view the intimate landscapes of life through a new perspective.

The exhibition presents imaginary therianthropes as well as combinations of different animals, such as a beast with the head of a crocodile and the wings of an eagle, a woman with rabbit ears, and a human figure who takes on the appearance and abilities of a dog, evoking a sense of the uncanny (myō). The artist captures the bizarre and uncanny sensation that arises from the perceptual gap between real and unreal, suggesting that this sense of myō intensifies as the boundary between reality and unreality expands.

MYŌ (Ignoramus et ignorabimus), alludes to the paradoxes of existence—things that exist but cannot be proven, and things that can be proven but do not exist. The artist presents a chaotic world where the boundaries between reality and unreality are blurred, suggesting that absolute truth may forever remain unknown. Through his latest works, he invites viewers into a world shaped by the delicate equilibrium of the uncanny, where the real and unreal are inextricably intertwined. The opening reception will be held on Friday, March 7, from 4 pm.

직접 창조한 세계관을 전통적인 고전 회화 형식의 화면에 담아내는 독창적인 작품을 선보여온 박민준 작가의 개인전 《묘(MYŌ)》가 일본 도쿄화랑+BTAP에서 2025년 3월 1일부터 4월 5일까지 개최된다. 도쿄화랑+BTAP는 일본 최초의 현대미술화랑으로 1948년 설립 이래 도쿄와 베이징을 거점을 두며 한·중·일을 중심으로 한 아시아의 현대미술 작가들을 소개하고 있다. 이번 전시에서는 작가는 상상으로 만들어진 비현실적인 형상이 현실과 차이를 둘 때, 현실과 비현실 간의 이질적인 모습에서 느낄 수 있는 ‘묘’ 함을 표현한 신작 15여 점이 소개된다.

박민준은 전통적인 고전 회화가 전하는 보편적 서사와 재현의 마술적 효과를 동시대 회화 언어로 연구 및 계승하는 작업을 전개해 오고 있다. 활동 초기 작가는 이카루스, 사이렌, 다프네 등 서구 신화 속 인물을 동양인의 모습으로 옮기고, 미술사의 고전이 된 르네상스와 고전주의 걸작을 재해석한 작품을 발표했다. 2010년대 중반부터는 서구 신화를 작품의 주제로 삼는 방식에서 벗어나 자신만의 서사 세계를 구축하며 ‘이미지’와 ‘텍스트’의 관계를 다각도로 살피는 〈라포르 서커스(Rapport Circus)〉와 〈두 개의 깃발(Two Flags)〉, 〈X〉, 〈콤메디아 델라르테(Commedia dell’Arte)〉 등의 다양한 시리즈를 선보였다. 인간의 삶과 죽음, 그를 초월한 꿈과 이상, 예술의 창조적 위대함과 가치 등이 그가 몰입해 온 철학적 주제다. 회화와 소설이 밀접한 관계를 맺으며 탄생한 신비로운 분위기를 간직한 그의 작품은 삶의 내밀한 풍경을 새로운 시각에서 바라보도록 안내한다.

이번 전시에서는 상상 속의 반인반수, 서로 다른 동물끼리 결합된 ‘묘’한 느낌의 작품들을 선보인다. 악어 머리를 하고 독수리의 날개를 가진 짐승, 토끼 귀를 한 여인, 개의 외형과 능력을 얻게 된 인간의 모습을 담으며 상상으로 만들어진 형상이 실제와 다를 때 생기는 거리감에서 오는 ‘묘’한 감정을 녹여냈다. 작가가 말하는 이 ‘묘’ 하다는 감정은 현실과 비현실의 경계에 서로 맞닿아 있으며 그 경계와 경계 사이의 공간이 커질수록 강해진다.

〈묘(Ignoramus et ignorabimus)〉는 실제로 존재하나 증명할 수 없고, 증명할 수는 있지만 존재하지 않는 것들이 있는 모순투성이의 세상에 우리가 살고 있음을 암시한다. 만들어진 것과 실제를 구분할 수 없는 혼돈의 세상 속에서 어떤 것이 진실인지 영원히 알 수 없음을 제시한다. 이번 신작들을 통해 작가는 현실과 비현실의 경계에서 그 사이 생기는 이질감의 적당한 균형이 주는 ‘묘’한 감각의 세계로 관객을 초대한다.  

오프닝 리셉션은 3월 7일 오후 4시에 진행될 예정이다.
