Ayoung Kim, widely recognized for her innovative media art practice that traverses reality and the virtual, has been selected as the recipient of the 2025 LG Guggenheim Award.
Since its launch in 2023, the LG Guggenheim Award has been an internationally recognized prize dedicated to supporting artists who expand the horizons of contemporary art through innovative use of technology. A distinguished jury—comprising museum directors, curators, scholars, and art professionals of global standing—conducted a four-month evaluation of artists nominated from around the world before selecting Ayoung Kim as the 2025 award recipient.
Upon receiving the award, Ayoung Kim expressed her appreciation: "As technology advances, human life inevitably becomes more complex. What artists can do through technology is to explore its uncertain possibilities—ones that may yet remain latent—and express them in the most intuitive way. I am neither a technological determinist nor a pessimist, but I have always strived to use technology as a medium to critically reflect on its impact on our society. I deeply appreciate the commitment of LG and the Guggenheim Museum in supporting artists to continue these vital artistic discourses."
The celebration of Ayoung Kim’s LG Guggenheim Award will take place at the Guggenheim Museum in New York on May 8. Additionally, the artist will engage with audiences in a special event, offering insight into her artistic practice and creative vision. Now in its third year, the LG Guggenheim Award is the flagship program of the LG Guggenheim Global Partnership, established by LG and the Guggenheim Museum in 2022. The inaugural award was presented to AI artist Stephanie Dinkins, followed by Shu Lea Cheang, a pioneering figure in Net Art from Taiwan, in its second year. The program will continue to select one artist annually through 2027.
Meanwhile, Ayoung Kim is preparing for a solo exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof—Nationalgalerie der Gegenwart in Berlin, running from February 28 to July 20, followed by a grand-scale solo exhibition at MoMA PS1 in New York this November. Titled Many Worlds Over, the exhibition at Hamburger Bahnhof marks the artist’s first solo exhibition in Berlin. First introduced at the Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI), where it garnered significant attention, the ACMI-commissioned new piece, Delivery Dancer’s Arc: 0° Receiver (2024), will be at the center of the exhibition. Alongside this work, a broad selection of Ayoung Kim’s representative pieces will be on view, including Delivery Dancer’s Sphere (2022) and The Evening Peak Time Returns (2022), both of which debuted at her 2022 solo exhibition Syntax and Sorcery at Gallery Hyundai and received critical acclaim. Additionally, the exhibition will feature the Orbit Dance Series (2022) series, Ghost Dancers A & B (2022), Stipulation (2022), as well as the video game simulation Delivery Dancer Simulation (2022), presenting a comprehensive view of the artist’s multifaceted practice. The exhibition happening in MoMA PS1 is Ayoung Kim's first grand-scaled solo exhibition in the States. The exhibition will introduce the artist's main piece that covers artist's creative vision and her newest work. The exhibition at MoMA PS1 marks Ayoung Kim’s first large-scale solo exhibition in the United States. Showcasing a carefully curated selection of her key works, the exhibition will encompass both representative pieces that define her artistic vision and her most recent works. Notably, this exhibition will be the first time all three works from the Delivery Dancer (2022–present) series are presented together in one space. The exhibition will be on view from November 6, 2025, to March 16, 2026.

2023년 출범한 연례 ‘LG 구겐하임 어워드’는 기술을 활용한 혁신적인 작업 활동으로 현대 예술의 지평을 확대하는데 크게 기여한 아티스트를 선정하여 지원하는 세계적인 예술상이다. 국제적인 위상을 갖춘 뮤지엄 관장, 큐레이터, 학자와 예술 전문가들로 구성된 심사 위원회는 세계 곳곳에서 추천된 작가들의 작품을 4개월 간 심사한 뒤 김아영을 수상자로 선발하였다.
어워드를 수상한 김아영 작가는 "기술이 발전할수록 인간의 삶은 점점 더 복잡해질 수밖에 없습니다. 예술가들이 기술을 통해 할 수 있는 일은 기술에 잠재돼 있을지 모를 불확실한 가능성을 탐구하고 이것을 가장 직관적인 방식으로 표현하는 것입니다. 저는 기술 결정론자도, 기술 비관론자도 아니지만, 기술이 우리 사회에 미치는 영향에 대해 기술을 활용해 이야기하기 위해 늘 노력해왔습니다. 예술가들이 이러한 예술 담론을 지속할 수 있도록 지원하는 LG와 구겐하임 미술관의 헌신에 깊은 감사를 전합니다." 라고 수상 소감을 밝혔다.
김아영의 ‘LG 구겐하임 어워드’ 수상을 축하하는 행사는 오는 5월 8일 뉴욕 구겐하임 미술관에서 열린다. 또한 김아영이 관객과 직접 만나 자신의 작품세계를 소개하는 행사가 예정되어 있다. 올해 3회째를 맞은 LG 구겐하임 어워드는 LG와 구겐하임 미술관이 지난 2022년 발족한 ‘LG 구겐하임글로벌 파트너십’의 대표 프로그램이다. 1회는 인공지능을 활용한 작가인 스테파니 딘킨스(Stephanie Dinkins), 2회는 대만 출신의 ‘넷 아트’의 선구자인 슈 리 칭(Shu Lea Cheang)이 수상했다. 오는 2027년까지 해마다 한 명의 아티스트를 선정한다.
한편, 김아영은 오는 2월 28일부터 7월 20일까지 베를린에 위치한 함부르거 반호프 미술관과 오는 11월 미국의 뉴욕현대미술관 PS1(MoMA PS1)에서 대규모 개인전 개최를 앞두고 있다. 함부르거 반호프 미술관에서 열릴 예정인 《Many Worlds Over》는 작가의 첫 독일 미술관 개인전이다. 호주무빙이미지센터에(ACMI)에서 처음 소개되어 큰 주목을 받은 ACMI 커미션 신작 〈딜리버리 댄서의 선: 0°의 리시버〉(2024)를 중심으로 2022년 갤러리현대 개인전 《문법과 마법》에서 처음 선보여 화제를 모았던 대표작 〈딜리버리 댄서의 구〉(2022)와 〈다시 돌아온 저녁 피크 타임〉(2022)을 비롯해, 〈궤도 댄스〉(2022) 연작, 〈고스트 댄서 A & B〉(2022), 〈약정〉(2022) 등의 조각 작품과 비디오 게임 시뮬레이션 버전 〈딜리버리 댄서 시뮬레이션〉(2022) 등이 김아영을 대표하는 작품군이 폭넓게 전시된다. 뉴욕현대미술관 PS1(MoMA PS1)의 전시는 김아영 작가의 미국에서의 첫 번째 대규모 개인전으로, 작가의 작품 세계를 아우르는 대표작과 가장 최근 공개된 작품을 포함한 주요 작품들을 엄선하여 소개하며 〈딜리버리 댄서〉(2022–현재) 시리즈의 세 작품을 처음으로 모두 한자리에서 선보인다. 전시는 11월 6일부터 2026년 3월 16일까지.
