Seung-taek Lee 이승택 : Seung-taek Lee Hall & appointed as Distinguished Invited Professor at KAIST

Dec 17, 2024

The lobby of Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (hereafter KAIST) Faculty Hall, now renamed as the “Seung-taek Lee Hall,” is presenting 33 major works by Seung-taek Lee, a pioneering figure in Korean experimental art. As of December 17, 2024, the works are on display, including his Earth Play (1993). All the works were donated by Lee, who was appointed Distinguished Invited Professor in KAIST’s Department of Physics on April 1, 2024.

In a special lecture delivered to KAIST’s physics faculty and students last April, Lee introduced his artistic concepts of Non-sculpture and Non-material. These ideas challenge the traditional definition of sculpture, delving into the essence of things and transcending material limitations by visualizing invisible natural movements and sounds. By doing so, Lee highlights the parallels between the universal laws explored by physics and his artistic method, fostering a creative dialogue between science and art, and presenting new possibilities for interdisciplinary collaboration.

KAIST President Kwang Hyung Lee shared his excitement, saying, “Seung-taek Lee’s vision, developed over 70 years of artistic experimentation, will inspire our scientists.” Lee joins other cultural figures, such as Sumi Jo and G-Dragon, as part of KAIST’s Distinguished Invited Professors.
