The exhibition catalogue for Reflection, Yoo Geun-Taek’s solo exhibition at Gallery Hyundai, is now published.
Reflection points to how “I,” an autonomous entity, perceives the world, discovering the robust vitality engrained in our everyday life and the brilliant moments that weave together life and death. The catalogue includes plates of approximately forty works that are presented in the exhibition including Spring - Beginning of the World, Fountain, Moving Life, Window, Speaking Garden, and Reflection. Alongside the images, Yoo Geun-Taek, or Translucency of Painting, an essay by the acclaimed Japanese art critic Minemura Toshiaki, positions Yoo’s painterly practice within the overall Korean art historical context and defines the interdimensional nature of his work which spans across reality, unreality, and surreality. Furthermore, a conversation titled The Power of Painting Is the Power of the Body between the artist and Bae Wonjung, curator at the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, harkens back to the legacy of Oriental painting and East Asian aesthetics within the trajectory of Korean history, suggesting a broader interpretation of the overarching idea of "everyday life" in Yoo’s paintings.

“이번 전시 공간 안에서 회화가 어떻게 인간의 몸으로 육박할 수 있는지, 그걸 보고 싶습니다. 그 장면은 어떤 연출적인 요소, 정서적인 요소 등 여러 가지 요소들이 함께 절충되고 움직일 때 가능해질 것입니다. 저의 그림이 단순히 그림이 아니라면 좋겠어요. 그것이 어떤 하나의 공간에 들어오게 되면, 그 공간 안에서 전혀 다른 체험을 하게 만드는 장치가 되었으면 좋겠어요. 그러니까 무엇을 그렸다거나 내용의 문제를 넘어서 내 그림을 보면서 아무 생각이 없어지는 상태, 그것을 나의 그림과 전시 공간이 함께 실현해 내는 것이 제가 진정 작가로서 이루고 싶은 꿈입니다.” – 유근택
《반영》은 '나'라는 주체가 이 세상을 어떻게 감각할 수 있는지를 다채롭게 투영하며 일상에 내재된 강인한 생명력과 삶과 죽음이 얽힌 찬란한 순간을 발견할 수 있는 전시이다. 도록에는 〈봄 - 세상의 시작〉, 〈분수〉, 〈이사〉, 〈창문〉, 〈말하는 정원〉, 〈반영〉 등의 연작 40여 점의 화보가 실렸다. 함께 수록된 미네무라 도시아키의 에세이 「유근택, 또는 회화의 반투명성에 관하여」에서는 유근택 회화의 한국의 미술사적 맥락과 현실과 비현실, 초현실을 넘나드는 잠재성을 조명한다. 또한, 국립현대미술관 학예연구사 배원정이 진행한 작가와의 대담 「회화의 힘은 결국 몸의 힘」이 함께 수록되어 유근택의 작업을 한국화와 동양미학의 맥락으로 되돌아가 그 계보를 되짚고 대표 연작들에 담긴 ‘일상성’에 대해 보다 폭넓은 이해를 선사한다.
