Gallery Hyundai proudly presents world-renowned artist Minjung Kim’s limited editions for the first time. The artist has created limited editions in three colors—black, blue, and red—of her iconic series Mountain, which expands traditional ink wash painting into the realm of contemporary abstraction. 

For the last three decades, Minjung Kim has paved a unique creative practice bridging paper, brush, and ink as the traditional foundations of East Asian painting with the compositional grammar of Western abstract art. For her, creation is nothing less than a performative journey from chaos to order, from stillness to movement. Her consciousness emptied of stray thoughts, Kim’s hands work with a mediative rhythm to meticulously arrange burnt pieces of hanji (Korean traditional paper). 

The Mountain series, the artist visualizes the language of contemporary art through contemplative musings on philosophical themes such as emptiness and fullness, positive and negative. Subtle variations in the density of ink that have the appearance of flowing like waves from the top of the composition to the bottom, and vice versa, draw us into a state of quiet reflection, opening boundless horizons of imagination based on the viewer’s own experiences and memories. 

The three Mountain limited edition works realize the vividness of the artist’s original brushstrokes through archival pigment printing, a printing technique that sprays ultrafine particles of ink. They also feature the artist’s original handwritten signature and seal. 

갤러리현대는 세계적 활동을 펼치는 김민정 작가의 리미티드 에디션 작품을 첫 공개한다. 전통 산수화를 동시대 추상회화의 맥락으로 확장하는 작가의 대표 연작 〈Mountain〉의 검정, 파랑, 빨강 세 가지 컬러의 에디션을 만날 수 있다. 

김민정은 지난 30여 년 동안 동아시아 회화 예술의 고유한 유산인 지필묵(紙筆墨)의 전통을 서구 추상미술의 조형 어법과 결합하는 독창적인 작품 세계를 펼쳐왔다. 작가에게 창작은 혼돈에서 질서, 정지에서 움직임으로 향하는 수행적인 여정과 다름 없다. 그는 잡념을 지우고 부지런히 손을 움직여 태운 한지 조각을 섬세하게 배열해낸다. 

〈Mountain〉 연작을 통해 작가는 비움과 채움, 음(陰)과 양(陽) 등의 명상적인 철학적 사유를 동시대 미술의 언어로 시각화한다. 물결처럼 화면의 위에서 아래로, 아래에서 위로 흘러 내리는 듯한 먹과 색의 은은한 농담은 우리를 고요한 사색으로 빠져들게 하며, 보는 이의 경험과 기억에 따라 다채로운 상상의 지평을 연다.

리미티드 에디션으로 제작된 세 점의 〈Mountain〉은 초미립자의 잉크를 뿌려 인쇄하는 기법인 아카이벌 피그먼트 프린트(Archival Pigment Print)로 만들어져 원화의 붓질을 보는 생생한 느낌을 구현했으며, 모든 에디션에는 작가의 친필 사인과 낙관이 새겨져 있다. 

 

“I miss my country very much and this is why I paint the mountains. The mountains in my painting are not specific mountains that I have been to. Once, I met some Korean people and they said “your mountain must be Jirisan Mountain!” Actually, my mom lived there for 3 years, but I have no memories of the place. Interestingly, I paint something that looks like Korean mountains, it is different from the Dolomites and other mountains in the West. I cannot explain why I have done this or why I have so focused on painting mountains.”

"산을 그리는 이유는 제가 한국을 무척 그리워하기 때문입니다. 제 그림에 등장하는 산은 제가 가봤던 실제의 산이 아닙니다. 한번은 몇몇 한국 사람이 제게 ‘당신의 산은 분명 지리산이네요!’라고 하기도 했어요. 사실 어머니께서 지리산 자락에 3년 정도 사셨는데, 저는 그곳에 관한 기억이 전혀 없습니다. 흥미롭게도, 제가 그리는 산들은 어쩐지 한국의 산을 닮았어요. 돌로미티산맥 같은 서양의 산들과는 다르죠. 제가 왜 그토록 산을 그려왔고, 그에 집중했는지 설명할 수는 없습니다. 그렇지만 저는 산에 대해 자주 생각하며 이 작업을 계속해오고 있어요."

Minjung Kim Born in Gwangju, South Korea in 1962, Minjung Kim studied calligraphy and watercolor from a young age and went on to major in Oriental Painting at the undergraduate and graduate schools at Hongik University. She studied abroad in Milan’s Accademia di Belle Arti di Brera. During studies in Europe, she was deeply inspired by artists like Constantin Brâncusi, Carl Andre, and Brice Marden. In the past two decades, she has presented works in Italy, Switzerland, China, the UK, the U.S, and Israel. Solo exhibitions at renown galleries and museums around the world include Marco (Museo d’Arte Contemporanea Roma), Rome (2012); Hermès Foundation, Singapore (2017); White Cube, London (2018); Langen Foundation, Neuss, Germany (2019), and Hill Art Foundation, New York (2020). She was introduced to Korea through Traces (2015) at OCI Museum of Art, Seoul, solo exhibition Paper, Ink and Fire: After the Process (2017), at Gallery Hyundai, Seoul, and the international invite Making the Void, Filling the Void (2018) at Gwangju Museum of Art, Gwangju. The Light, The Shade, The Depth at Palazzo Caboto in Venice, curated by Jean-Christophe Ammann, received particularly positive reviews worldwide. Minjung Kim also participated in Gwangju Biennale in 2004 and 2018. She will participate in the upcoming 14th Gwangju Biennial. Her works are part of collections at major institutions such as Fondazione Palazzo Bricherasio in Turin, Italy; The Museum Sbygningen in Copenhagen, Denmark; and the British Museum. She is currently active based in France and the U.S.

김민정 1962년 광주 출생. 어린 시절부터 서예와 수채화를 공부했으며, 홍익대 회화과 학부와 동대학원에서 동양화를 전공했다. 이탈리아 밀라노의 브레라국립미술원에서 유학했다. 유럽에서 미술을 공부하며 콘스탄틴 브랑쿠시, 브라이스 마든, 칼 안드레 등과 같은 미술가들에 깊은 영감을 받았다. 지난 20여 년간 이탈리아, 스위스, 중국, 영국, 미국, 이스라엘 등에서 작품을 선보였다. 2012년 로마 마르코 현대미술관, 2017년 싱가포르 에르메스 파운데이션, 2018년 화이트 큐브, 2019년 랑겐 파운데이션, 2020년 힐 아트 파운데이션 등 전세계 유수의 갤러리와 미술관에서 개인전을 개최했다. 2015년 OCI미술관 개인전 《결(Traces)》, 2017년 갤러리현대 개인전 《종이, 먹, 그을음: 그후》, 2018년 광주시립미술관에서 해외 유명 작가 초대전 《비움과 채움》, 2020년 갤러리현대 개인전 《Timeless》 등을 열며 한국에서도 작품을 선보였다. 2015년 장-크리스토프 암만(Jean-Christophe Ammann)이 기획해 베니스 비엔날레 기간 중 카보토 궁에서 열린 개인전 《빛, 그림자, 깊이》로 국제적인 주목을 받았다. 2004년과 2018년 광주비엔날레를 포함, 2023년 광주비엔날레에도 참여할 예정이다. 김민정의 작품은 이탈리아 토리노의 폰다치오네 팔라초 브리케라시오, 덴마크 코펜하겐의 스비닌겐 미술관, 영국 대영박물관 등의 중요 기관에 소장되어 있다. 현재 프랑스와 미국을 거점으로 활동하고 있다.
