Kang Seung Lee is selected to be featured in Azalea: Journal of Korean Literature & Culture Volume 15, published by the Korean Institute of Harvard University. Azalea has played a critical role in promoting Korean modern literature to the English-speaking audience, and has been served as educational resource of Korean literature at universities. Upon its 15th anniversary, this journal has particularly focused on the LGBTQ culture and literature; it introduces poetries, novels, critics, graphic novels and more that reflect the stories and rebellious minds of the LGBTQ communities, neglected from Korea’s mainstream historical narrative. Azalea Vol. 15 presents approximately 20 important works by Kang Seung Lee, which shed a new light on the LGBTQ communities of Korea; these works were shown at Lee’s solo exhibition Briefly Gorgeous at Gallery Hyundai, Seoul in 2021.
Based in Los Angeles, Kang Seung Lee has challenged the mainstream historical narrative and its focus on a first-world white male heterosexual narrative. The minorities from diverse space and time, who are forgotten or excluded in that narrative, are visualized through works by Lee. The artist transcends life, death and artistic legacy of the proceeding generations through his uniquely labor-intensive medium such as graphite drawing and gold thread embroidery on Sambe. Lee’s works are currently on view at Booth 3 from Frieze London.
이강승이 하버드대학교 한국학연구소에서 발표하는 저널 Azalea: Journal of Korean Literature & Culture 15호의 작가로 선정되었다. Azelea는 한국현대문학을 영어권에 알리는데 주도적 역할을 해왔으며, 영미권 대학의 대표적인 한국문학 교재로 사용되어왔다. 올해 창간 15주년을 맞이하여 ‘한국 LGBTQ+문학’을 주제로 삼고, 한국 주류 담론에서 꾸준히 배제되어온 된 성소수자들의 세계와 급진적인 저항 정신을 담은 시와 소설, 비평과 그래픽 노블 등을 소개한다. AZALEA 15호에는 문학 작품과 함께 이강승 작가가 2021년 갤러리현대 개최돼 호평 받은 《잠시 찬란한》 전에 선보인 작품과 한국의 LGBTQ 공동체를 재조명한 주요 작품 등 20여 점이 화보 형식으로 게재되었다.
이강승은 작품을 통해 1세계-백인-남성-이성애 중심으로 서술된 주류 역사에 도전한다. 그 서사 속에서 배제됐거나 잊힌, 다른 시공간을 살아온 소수자들이 이강승의 작품을 통해 만나고 가시화된다. 작가는 이들의 생애와 죽음, 그들이 남긴 예술적 유산을 오마주하며 흑연 드로잉이나 금실 자수 등 작가 특유의 노동집약적인 방법을 통해 전유한다. 이강승의 작품은 프리즈 런던의 갤러리현대 부스 B3에서도 만날 수 있다.
