It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Kim Guiline (1936-2021) who passed away on the 12 August, last Thursday in Paris.

Kim Guiline, the master of Korean abstract art, consistently pursued awareness of the surface through 50 years his oeuvre. Kim also encouraged spectators to actively participate in his perceptual activities, and suggested the act of looking at the works as a kind of meditation beyond mere encounters with paintings.

“I started drawing dots in my work after asking question to myself: 'What gives me comfort and stability when I look at pictures in a world that is full of complicated forms?' A dot can be a start, an end, or become a line, or a form. Time, thoughts, and traces present in the dot. As I put all the unnecessary elements aside, and apply the colors on the canvas with the simple movement of the brush and my hands, and as every single dot look the same but gives us different feeling, just like our human beings are all different, I wish my painting can give the viewer the comfort so he or she can meet silence and concentration.” - Kim Guiline

Kim Guiline had his solo exhibition in 2016 at Gallery Hyundai and the exhibition received attention as the exhibition embraced works released in the 1960s up to 2000s altogether. Kim’s works are in public collections of among others, Musée des Beaux-Arts de Dijon, France, Musée National d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, France, National Museum of Contemporary Art, Korea, Seoul Museum of Art, Busan Museum of Art and Daegu Art Museum, Korea.

재불화가 김기린(1936-2021) 화백이 지난 8월 12일 목요일 오후 숙환으로 별세했다.

‘한국 추상미술의 거장’ 김기린은 50년 화업을 통해 일관되게 평면에 대한 자각을 추구했다. 또한 그는 작품을 마주하는 관람객을 자신의 지각 행위에 적극적으로 동참할 수 있도록 유도하고, 작품을 보는 행위를 그림과의 단순한 조우를 넘어서는 일종의 명상으로 제시하였다. 

“처음에 점을 찍게 된 것은 ‘복잡하고 형상이 많은 이 세상에서 그림을 볼 때, 마음에 편안함과 안정감을 주는 것이 무엇일까?’ 하는 생각에서 시작하게 되었습니다. 점은 시작일수도, 끝일 수도, 또한 선도 되고, 형태도 되고, 그 안에는 시간도, 생각도, 흔적도 있습니다. 모든 불필요한 요소를 떨쳐버리고 붓과 내 손의 단순한 움직임으로 색을 캔버스에 올려놓았을 때, 점 하나 하나가 다 같은 듯 다른 느낌 일 때 – 마치 우리 인간이 다 다르듯이– 그림을 보는 사람들에게 조용하면서 집중할 수 있는 편안함을 줄 수 있지 않을까 합니다.” - 김기린

2016년 갤러리현대에서 그간 공개되지 않던 1960년대 작품부터 2000년대 발표한 작품을 아우르는 개인전을 개최하며, 국내외 미술계의 재조명을 받았다. 김기린의 작품은 국립현대미술관, 서울시립미술관, 부산시립미술관, 대구현대미술관, 프랑스 디종 디종미술관, 프랑스 파리 시립현대미술관 등 국내외 유수의 컬렉션에 소장되어 있다.
