Gallery Hyundai Produces and Releases Musician Kim Oki’s New Album SAUVE QUI PEUT in Conjunction with the Exhibition SAUVE QUI PEUT

Gallery Hyundai is pleased to announce the release of SAUVE QUI PEUT, a new full-length album by musician Kim Oki, on June 24. Produced by Gallery Hyundai in collaboration with the artist, the album originates from Gallery Hyundai’s group exhibition SAUVE QUI PEUT and extends its inquiry into a musical narrative. While employing different mediums, both the exhibition and the album reflect on contemporary uncertainty and transformation, attending to the sensibilities and attitudes through which art and reality are experienced today. Together, they turn their attention to the inner lives and conditions of individuals living through the same historical moment.
SAUVE QUI PEUT at Gallery Hyundai presents eight artists whose practices respond to the complexities of the contemporary moment through distinct artistic approaches in an era when grand narratives, myths, historical genealogies, and established paradigms are being dismantled and reconfigured. Through this collaboration, Kim Oki translates the exhibition’s thematic concerns into his own musical language, offering another narrative that moves between art and reality, the self and history.
Drawing its title from Jean-Luc Godard’s 1979 film, Sauve qui peut (la vie), both the exhibition and the album expand upon the phrase’s original implication—“those who can, save themselves” in a moment of crisis—to highlight artists who have developed independent artistic languages and modes of perception rather than aligning themselves with institutional frameworks, prevailing trends, or generational expectations. The grand narratives, myths, historical genealogies, and the paradigms of the art world and its market systems that once legitimized artistic practice have gradually lost their authority, giving way to a plurality of voices, perspectives, identities, experiences, and stories. In this age of pluralism, art is perhaps freer than ever before, yet it also exists within a landscape of unprecedented precariousness. Both the exhibition and the album begin with a simple yet fundamental question about the nature of art itself: What forms of beauty and sensibility can endure beyond their moment? Who are the artists capable of pursuing their own language and temperament to the very end?
In this album, Kim Oki traverses diverse musical languages—including Korean traditional music, muga (shamanic chant), jazz, ambient music, and hip-hop—to explore emotions and sensations surrounding repetition and obsession, ecstasy and desire, salvation and community. While sharing the exhibition’s conceptual framework, the album unfolds as an independent musical world rather than serving as the exhibition’s supplementary project. Through the intersection of multiple genres, traditions, and contemporary sounds, Kim Oki presents a unique interpretation of music, art, and the sensibilities through which individuals experience the present.
Featured collaborators include Dong-eon Kim, a practitioner of the East Coast Byeolsingut tradition and holder of the Busan Intangible Cultural Heritage designation for Gijang Ogugut; Son Jeong-jin, an educator and inheritor of the East Coast Byeolsingut tradition; Yamagata Tweakster (a.k.a. Vad Hahn), a people’s entertainer, minimalist and shamanistic performer, and a spiritual pillar of Korea’s independent music scene; acclaimed actress Ok Ja-yeon, known for her remarkable range and nuanced character portrayals; and rapper Ejo, a leading artist of the label Alive Planet. Session musicians include traditional Korean musician Park minpyo, bassists Song nam hyun and Jeonjekon, trumpeter q the trumpet, and guitarist Kyungju Tak.
Although rooted in jazz, Kim Oki’s musical practice does not remain within the boundaries of any single genre. Centered on his saxophone practice, his work moves fluidly between free jazz, noise, rock, ambient music, traditional Korean music, and shamanic sound traditions, resulting in a highly distinctive musical language. Beyond formal experimentation, his work explores fundamental human emotions and states of being, including loss and memory, grief and mourning, healing and salvation. His use of repetition and improvisation to intensify emotional experience and create cycles of tension and release often evokes the structure of rituals or shamanic ceremonies, transforming music from an object of listening into a process of experience and catharsis.
While deeply attuned to the inner world of the individual, Kim Oki’s music remains equally sensitive to the realities of the present. His work reflects on social tragedies and collective wounds, the loneliness and alienation of modern life, and the conditions of life in an increasingly unstable moment. Rather than relying on explicit messages or direct statements, these concerns emerge through layers of sound, atmosphere, and emotion. Within his music coexist a determination to confront reality without turning away and a desire to discover new modes of perception and possibilities within it. In this regard, Kim Oki’s practice extends beyond performance, becoming a way of sensing and interpreting the world we inhabit today, as well as an ongoing exploration of the forces that sustain life amid confusion and uncertainty.

갤러리현대는 6월 24일, 독자적인 음악 세계를 구축해 온 뮤지션 김오키의 정규 앨범 《할 수 있는 자가 구하라(SAUVE QUI PEUT)》을 발매한다. 갤러리현대가 제작하고 김오키와 협업한 이번 앨범은 동명의 그룹전 《할 수 있는 자가 구하라(SAUVE QUI PEUT)》에서 출발한 프로젝트로, 전시가 제기하는 문제의식을 음악적 서사로 확장한다. 전시와 음악은 서로 다른 매체를 사용하지만, 모두 동시대의 불확실성과 변화 속에서 오늘날 예술과 현실을 바라보는 감각과 태도에 주목하고, 나아가 같은 시대를 살아가는 개인의 내면과 삶의 조건을 함께 응시한다.
갤러리현대의 《할 수 있는 자가 구하라(SAUVE QUI PEUT)》는 기존의 일률적인 거대 서사와 신화, 역사적 계보, 산업적 패러다임이 해체되고 재편되는 시대에 각자의 미적 지향점으로 동시대에 응답하는 ‘할 수 있는 자’ 여덟 작가를 선보이는 전시이다. 김오키는 이번 협업을 통해 전시의 문제의식을 자신만의 음악 세계로 번안하며, 예술과 현실, 개인과 시대를 가로지르는 또 하나의 서사를 선보인다.
장 뤽 고다르의 1979년 영화 《할 수 있는 자가 구하라(SAUVE QUI PEUT)》와 동명인 전시와 앨범은 위기의 상황에서 ‘할 수 있는 자가 알아서 대피하라’는 원제의 의미를 확장하여, 제도와 유행, 세대적 규범에 기대기보다 독자적인 감각과 태도로 작업해 온 예술가를 조명한다. 예술의 정당성을 뒷받침해 온 거대서사와 신화, 역사적 계보, 예술 시장의 패러다임 또한 점차 그 영향력을 잃고 해체되었으며, 그 자리를 수많은 목소리와 관점, 정체성, 경험과 서사가 채우고 있다. 바야흐로 다원주의적 시대, 오늘날 예술은 그 어느 때보다 자유로워졌지만, 동시에 그 어느 때보다 불확실한 시간에 놓여 있다. 전시와 앨범 모두 이러한 시대 속에서 예술의 본질에 대한 가장 단순하면서도 근본적인 질문에서 출발한다. 시대를 넘어 지속될 수 있는 감각과 아름다움은 무엇인가, 또 그런 태도와 기질을 자신의 언어로 끝까지 밀고 나갈 수 있는 예술가는 누구인가를 묻는다.
김오키는 이번 앨범에서 국악과 무가(巫歌), 재즈와 앰비언트, 힙합 등 서로 다른 음악적 언어를 가로지르며, 반복과 집착, 환희와 욕망, 구원과 공동체를 둘러싼 정서와 감각을 탐색한다. 전시와 문제의식을 공유하면서도 독립적인 음악 세계를 펼쳐 보이는 이번 앨범은 전시의 단순한 부속 프로젝트가 아닌 하나의 자율적인 음악 작업으로 기획되었다. 다양한 장르와 전통, 동시대적 사운드가 교차하는 가운데 김오키는 오늘날의 음악과 예술, 나아가 현재를 살아가는 개인의 감각과 태도를 독창적인 방식으로 풀어낸다.
피처링으로는 동해안 별신굿 전승자이자 부산광역시무형유산 기장오구굿 예능보유자 김동언과 동해안 별신굿 전승교육자 손정진, 민중 엔터테이너이자 미니멀리즘과 샤머니즘적 퍼포머이며 한국 자립음악 생태계의 정신적 지주인 야마가타 트윅스터 (a.k.a 한받), 깊이 있는 캐릭터 해석력으로 매 작품 새로운 스펙트럼을 증명하는 실력파 배우 옥자연, 레이블 '얼라이브 플래닛(Alive Planet)'의 주역인 래퍼 Ejo가 참여했다. 세션으로는 국악 연주자 박민표, 베이시스트 송남현, 트럼펫에 q the trumpet, 베이시스트 전제곤, 기타리스트 탁경주가 함께했다.
김오키의 음악은 재즈를 기반으로 하지만 특정 장르에 머무르지 않는다. 그는 색소폰 연주를 중심으로 프리 재즈와 노이즈, 록, 앰비언트, 전통음악과 무속음악까지 폭넓게 넘나들며 자신만의 독자적인 음악 세계를 구축해 왔다. 그의 작업은 장르적 실험에 머무르지 않고, 상실과 기억, 슬픔과 애도, 치유와 구원 같은 인간의 근원적인 감정과 정서를 깊이 탐구한다. 특히 반복과 즉흥연주를 통해 감정을 증폭시키고 긴장과 해소를 만들어내는 방식은 굿이나 의례(ritual)를 연상시키며, 음악을 단순한 감상의 대상이 아닌 경험과 정화의 과정으로 확장한다.
그의 음악은 개인의 내면을 향하면서도 동시대 현실에 대한 예민한 감각을 놓치지 않는다. 사회적 비극과 상처, 현대인의 고독과 소외, 불안정한 시대를 살아가는 존재의 조건을 응시하면서도 직접적인 언어나 메시지보다 소리와 정서의 층위를 통해 그것을 드러낸다. 그의 음악에는 현실을 외면하지 않고 끝까지 마주하려는 태도와, 그 속에서 새로운 감각과 가능성을 발견하려는 의지가 공존한다. 이러한 점에서 김오키의 음악은 단순한 연주를 넘어 오늘날 우리가 마주한 세계를 감각하고 해석하는 하나의 방식이자, 혼란과 불확실성 속에서도 삶을 지속하게 만드는 힘을 탐색하는 실천이라 할 수 있다.
