Gallery Hyundai is delighted to announce the presentation of Seung-taek Lee’s Earth Play (1990s) for the Art Basel Miami Beach Meridians sector, curated by Magalí Arriola, Director of Museo Tamayo, Mexico City. A seven-meter high inflatable balloon with an oil paint finish rendering a hyper-realistic satellite image of the Earth, this colossal installation reflects Lee’s interest in communicating environmental issues to the larger public. Although the work was first conceived in 1989 and staged as participatory performances throughout the following decade, it has become all the more relevant today, speaking to the artist’s extraordinary prescience and, more broadly, his contribution to the social and communal role of art in our society. Adjacent to the balloon installation will be a wall with six photographic documentations of Lee’s Earth Performance throughout the years and around the globe. Of these, Earth Play (1990s) provides a documented example of one such performance. This marks the second time that Lee’s body of work addressing environmental issues has been introduced to the North American audiences, with the first being the artist’s presentation at Canal Projects, New York, earlier this year. Complementing Lee’s work shown at the Galleries sector, the installation Earth Play for Meridians nods to the boundless scope of Lee’s artistic practice, highlighting Lee as an artist who is ever-attentive and ever-engaged with the world surrounding him.

갤러리현대는 멕시코시티 타마요 박물관 관장인 마갈리 아리올라가 큐레이팅한 아트바젤 마이애미 비치 메르디안스 섹터에서 이승택의 〈지구놀이〉(1990년대)를 선보인다. 지구의 초현실적인 위성 이미지가 유화로 그려진 7미터 높이의 대형 풍선 설치물로서 환경 문제를 더 많은 대중에게 알리려는 작가의 관심을 반영하는 작품이다. 1989년에 처음 구상되어 이후 10년 동안 참여형 퍼포먼스로 선보여졌지만, 사실 오늘날 현대 사회에 더욱 관련성이 높은 작업이라 할 수 있다. 이는 작가의 탁월한 예지력과 예술의 사회적, 공동체적 역할에 있어 그의 실천적인 작가 정신을 의미한다. 풍선 설치물 옆에는 작가가 수년간 세계 곳곳에 선보인 〈지구 퍼포먼스〉를 담은 6장의 사진 기록물이 함께 소개된다. 올해 초 뉴욕 캐널 프로젝트에서의 개인전에 이어 환경 문제를 다룬 이승택의 작품이 북미 관객들에게 소개되는 것은 이번이 두 번째이다. 갤러리즈 섹터에서의 작가의 작품과 함께 소개되는 메리디안스에서의 설치작 〈지구놀이〉는 작가의 예술적 실천의 무한한 의지를 보여주며, 그가 그를 둘러싼 세계에 끊임없는 주의를 기울이고 관계를 맺는 작가임을 보여준다.
