Working in a broad range of areas including not only art but also culture, history, and science, Matti Braun weaves together vast webs of meaning as he enthusiastically discovers and explores lesser-known narratives. His work is based on research into cultural migration, exchange, and transformation across Eastern and Western times and spaces, as long with particular figures and themes ranging from physicist Vikram Sarabhai and Mahatma Gandhi to Le Corbusier, India’s space exploration program, the unfilmed script for The Alien by Satyajit Ray (1921–1992), and Steven Spielberg’s E.T. In the process, it provides an opportunity to viewers to break with standardized frameworks of interpretation and form readings based on their own individual narratives.
Born in 1968 in what was then East Berlin, Matti Braun graduated in 1996 from the Braunschweig University of Art. He has held solo exhibitions at the galleries Esther Schipper (2007, 2010, 2014, 2019, and 2020) and BQ (2008, 2012, and 2017) in Berlin and OMR (2016 and 2022) in Mexico City. He has also held solo exhibitions at numerous other major institutions in Europe and the Americas, including A Lost Future: Matti Braun (2018), at the Rubin Museum of Art in New York; Lak Sol (2016) at the Kunstverein Heilbronn; Gost Log (2012) at Arnolfini in Bristol, England; Salo (2012) at the Kunstverein Braunschweig and La Galerie–Contemporary Art Center in Noisy-le-Sec, France; Kola (2009) at the Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein in Vaduz; and Özurfa (2008) at the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and Museion—Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art in Bolzano, a city in Italy’s South Tyrol region. His work has been included in the collections of such eminent institutions as Germany’s Bundeskunstsammlung (Federal Collection of Contemporary Art), the Finnish National Gallery, LACMA (Los Angeles County Museum of Art), the Ludwig Forum for International Art, Museion—Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, the Lenbachhaus in Munich, and the Montblanc Cultural Foundation. He received the Bonner Kunstverein’s Peter Mertes Award in 1994 and the Förderpreis des Landes Nordrhein-Westfalen für Bildende Kunst in 2004. He currently lives and works in Cologne.

마티 브라운은 1968년 독일 베를린에서 태어나 1996년에 독일 브라운슈바이크 조형예술대학교(Braunschweig University of Art)에서 수학하였다. 에스더쉬퍼갤러리(2020, 2019, 2014, 2010, 2007), BQ갤러리(2017, 2012, 2008), 멕시코시티 OMR 갤러리(2022, 2016) 등에서 갤러리 개인전을 개최했다. 2018년 미국 뉴욕의 루빈미술관에서 《A Lost Future》, 2016년 독일 하일브론의 쿤스트페어라인 하이브론에서 《Lak Sol》, 2012년 영국 브리스톨의 아르놀피니 현대미술센터에서 《Gost Log》, 2010년 독일 브라운슈바이크의 쿤스트페어라인 브라운슈바이크와 프랑스 누아지르세크의 라 갤러리 컨템포러리아트센터에서 《Salo》, 2009년 리히텐슈타인 파두츠의 쿤스트뮤지엄 리히텐슈타인에서 《Kola》, 2008년 독일 쾰른의 루드비히미술관과 이탈리아 사우스 티롤의 뮤제이온근현대미술관에서 《Özurfa》 등 유럽과 북남미 주요 기관에서 개인전을 열었다. 그의 작품은 독일연방공화국현대미술관, 핀란드국립미술관, 루드비히국제예술포럼, 뮤제이온근현대미술관, 렌바흐하우스미술관, 몽블랑문화재단 등 유수한 기관에 소장되어 있다. 현재 쾰른에서 거주하며 활동 중이다.
