Sabine Moritz was born in 1969 in Quedlinburg, a town located between Hanover and Leipzig in the former East Germany. In 1985, her family moved to West Germany, where she studied at the Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main in 1989, and the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf in 1991.

Through her repeated variations on objects, Moritz has explored the mutability of memory with a meticulous eye and sincere mindset. Her early work was based on her experiences as a child in Lobeda, which was then part of East Germany. Her work from her time in college in the early 1990s until the early 2000s is a dense exploration of the complex relationships among people, places, and things, as seen in Lobeda (1991–2000), JENA Düsseldorf (1992–2000), and Buildings (1993–2014).

The 9/11 terrorist attacks in 2001 had a profound influence on the work of Moritz, an artist fascinated by the multiple aspects of a single object. Exploring subjects like helicopters, airplanes, and battleships, her work focused mainly on machines that offers convenient means of transportation, but that can also suddenly transform into objects of alarm and terror. Soldiers conducting operations, people dying, cities in ruins as helicopters fly overhead, airplanes rising and descending on a runway, battleships and fishing boats traveling on rivers and seas—her subjects appear like snapshots or stills from a film or documentary, most of the scenes blurred as though to visualize a brutal history that is all too easily forgotten. Since 2009, Moritz has addressed the theme of the War & Postwar Period in the Soviet Union (2009–2015), creating paintings that capture everyday moments from the labor and leisure of farmers, soldiers, and ordinary people living as communities in wartime. Speaking of her figurative work, the world-renowned curator Hans Ulrich Obrist has said, “The drawings and paintings include remembered images in order to clearly convey the ephemeral nature of memory.”

After embarking on an exploration of historical and political landscapes with her figurative painting, Moritz has focused on “psychological landscapes” with her abstract painting work since 2015. She has been lauded by critics for her alluring abstract images, achieved through dynamic, ecstatic brushstrokes; delicate gradations of color within a single stroke; coarse and primitive “nonlinear lines” applied in impasto style; and the eclectic sensory collisions triggered by the multiple layers of color and their pronounced material qualities. The artist has said that while her figurative paintings are expressions of concrete experiences, spaces, and thoughts, her abstract paintings “focus on human and sensory realms that are not universal, transporting them into a spiritual world.”

She has held numerous solo exhibitions at major galleries and institutions in Europe, including Pilar Corrias Gallery in London (2014, 2015, 2018, and 2021), Marian Goodman Gallery in Paris (2013, 2016, and 2019), König Galerie in Berlin (2018), Felix Ringel Galerie in Düsseldorf (2012, 2015, and 2020), and Kunsthalle Rostock (2019). She has also taken part in special exhibitions at Kunsthalle Emden (2018), the Imperial War Museums in London (2017), and the Neues Museum in Nuremberg (2012). Her work is included in the collections of such eminent institutions as Tate Modern, Deutsche Bank Collection, Deutscher Bundestag Artothek, and the LVMH Moët Hennessy Louis Vuitton Collection.

As an extension of her artistic body of work, Moritz has also been broadening into publication work. She published Lobeda (2010, 2021), a collection of drawings from time in the titular community, with the preeminent art publishers Buchhandlung Walther König and HENI Publishing. As a continuation of that effort, she published JENA Düsseldorf (2011, 2021), a collection focusing on memories and photographs from her childhood. In addition, collections like Limbo: Paintings from 2005 (2006), Roses (2010), and Lilies and Objects (2011) capture her different methodologies as she explores themes such as war, flowers, still-lifes, and spaces within spaces through charcoal and pastels. Sabine Moritz: Paintings 2017–2021, a monograph containing her work over the last five years, is scheduled for release in the near future.

사빈 모리츠(Sabine Moritz)는 1969년 동독 하노버와 라이프치히 사이의 크베들린부르크에서 태어났다. 1985년 유년 시절을 보낸 동독의 로베다를 떠나서 서독으로 이주한 모리츠는 1989년에 오펜바흐미술대학교(Hochschule für Gestaltung Offenbach am Main), 1991년에 쿤스트아카데미 뒤셀도르프(Kunstakademie Düsseldorf)에서 수학하였다.  

사빈 모리츠는 대상을 반복하고 변주함으로써 기억의 가변성을 섬세한 시선과 진지한 태도로 탐색해 왔다. 그의 초기 작업은 동독의 고향 로베다(Lobeda)에서 보낸 유년기의 경험이 밑바탕을 이룬다. 1990년대 초반 대학생 시절부터 2000년대 초반까지 발표한 <로베다(Lobeda)>(1991–2000), <예나 뒤셀도르프(JENA Düsseldorf)>(1992-2000), <빌딩(Buildings)>(1993-2014) 등에서, 작가는 사람과 장소, 사물 사이의 복합적 관계를 밀도 있게 탐구한다. 

2001년 발생한 9·11 테러 사건은 한 대상이 지닌 다면성에 매료되는 작가의 작업에 깊은 영향을 미친다. 헬리콥터, 비행기, 군함 등을 다루는 작품들은 편리한 이동수단이지만 한순간 경계와 공포의 대상이 된 기계 장치를 주로 다룬다. 작전 중인 군인과 죽어가는 사람들, 파괴된 도시와 그 상공을 배회하는 헬리콥터, 활주로를 오르락내리락하는 비행기, 강과 바다를 순항하는 군함과 고깃배의 모습이 스냅사진이나 다큐멘터리, 영화의 스틸컷처럼 그려지고, 대부분의 장면은 쉽게 망각되는 폭력적 역사를 가시화하듯 흐릿하게 나타난다. 2009년부터는 <소비에트 연방에서의 전쟁과 전쟁 이후(War & Postwar Period in the Soviet Union)>(2009-2015)를 주제로, 전쟁 속에서 공동체 생활을 지속하는 농부와 군인, 일반인의 여가와 노동의 일상적 순간을 화폭으로 옮겼다. 세계적 큐레이터 한스 울리히 오브리스트는 사빈 모리츠의 구상 작업을 “드로잉과 회화가 기억의 덧없음을 명확하게 전달하기 위해 기억된 이미지를 담아낸다”라고 분석하였다. 

구상 회화를 통해 역사적이고 정치적인 풍경을 연구한 작가는 2015년부터 시작한 추상 회화에서 ‘정신적 풍경’을 다룬다. 무아지경이 느껴지는 역동적인 붓질, 붓질 한 번에 담긴 색의 섬세한 그러데이션, 임파스토 기법으로 쌓아 올린 비선형의 거칠고 원초적인 선들, 물성이 강조된 다층적인 색의 레이어가 촉발하는 다채로운 감각의 충돌로 완성되는 매혹적인 추상적 화면은 평단의 찬사를 받고 있다. 작가는 구상 회화가 구체적인 경험과 공간, 생각을 표현한다면, “추상 회화는 보편적이지 않은 인간의 영역과 감각적인 영역을 다루며, 이는 정신적인 세계로 옮겨간다”고 강조한다. 

런던 필라코리아스갤러리(2021, 2018, 2015, 2014), 파리 마리안굿맨갤러리(2019, 2016, 2013), 베를린 쾨니히갤러리(2018), 뒤셀도르프 펠릭스링겔갤러리(2020, 2015, 2012) 및 쿤스트할레로스토크(2019) 등 유럽의 주요 갤러리 및 기관에서 다수의 개인전을 개최했다. 그밖에 쿤스트할레엠덴(2018), 런던 임페리얼전쟁박물관(2017), 뉘른베르크주립미술관(2012) 등에서 열린 기획전에도 참여했다. 그의 작품은 테이트모던, 도이체방크컬렉션, 독일연방의회미술관, 루이비통모에헤네시재단(LVMH) 등 유수한 기관에 소장되어 있다.

사빈 모리츠는 작품 세계의 확장으로써 출판 작업을 이어오고 있다. 저명한 예술전문서적 출판사인 발터 쾨니히 출판사(Buchhandlung Walther König)와 헤니 출판사(HENI Publishing)에서 로베다 시절의 드로잉을 모은 작품집 『Lobeda』(2010, 2021), 그 연장선상에서 유년시절의 기억과 사진을 바탕으로 완성한 『JENA Düsseldorf』(2011, 2021)가 출간되었다. 이외에도 『Limbo: Paintings from 2005』(2006), 『Roses』(2010)와 『Lilies and Objects』(2011) 등의 작품집은 전쟁, 꽃, 정물화, 공간의 틈 등의 테마를 목탄과 파스텔을 재료로 탐구한 작가의 다양한 방법론을 담고 있다. 모리츠의 최근 5년간의 작업을 담은 모노그래프 『Sabine Moritz: Paintings 2017-2021』가 곧 출간 예정이다.
