Working between Seoul and London, Jin Han Lee (b. 1982) creates lively paintings that cut across the abstract and figurative to channel ideas and senses that escape language, such as the feeling of alienation in a foreign country, parting from a lover, and intimacy shared through warmth across bodies. From moving to London in 2007 where she started her career to returning to Korea after fifteen years in the UK, Lee captures "untranslatable" moments that only painting can articulate from fissures between individual and language, between cultures, and between each painting. Modulating motifs and brushstrokes imbue her dreamlike worlds with a signature liveliness, reflecting the nature of language, human relationships, and memory that are constantly vibrating like life itself.

Lee's artistic journey began with her initial experiment in the Renaissance perspective that converges at a vanishing point, a signature of traditional painting. By 2010, her paintings evolved into heterogeneous spaces that amalgamate traditional perspective with elements of modernism. At times, she accents these abstract landscapes with popular cultural references such as neologisms, Korean popular music, comics, and literature. Recently, the artist's explorations in VR (virtual reality) during an artist residency in 2021 kindled her reflection on the essential language of painting, leading to works with an innovative sense of three-dimensional spatiality through brushstrokes that "pull" outwards and echo traditions of East Asian calligraphy. Lee's paintings are firmly rooted in the particular-daringly honest landscapes of her own inner life. The artist uses energetic brushstrokes to grasp this landscape but does not forget to step back and take a slow look at her own canvas.

Jin Han Lee graduated from Hongik University, and received her MFA from Central Saint Martins, University of Arts London and Goldsmiths, University of London. She then completed her PhD at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, in 2021. Lee has held solo shows at Gallery Hyundai, Seoul (2024); Union Pacific, London (2024); Space ISU, Seoul (2024); Nook Gallery, Seoul (2021); Beaconsfield, London (2021); Gallery EM, Seoul (2017), HADA Contemporary, London (2012); and Alternative Space LOOP, Seoul (2012). She has also participated in group exhibitions at institutions and galleries worldwide including Palazzo Tiepolo Passi, Venice (2024); N/A, Seoul (2024); Chapter NY, New York (2024); Union Pacific, London (2023); BB&M, Seoul (2022); and Space K, Gwacheon (2018). She has been selected for the Beaconsfield Residency (2021), Windsor and Newton Elephant Lab Residency (2019), The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation Residency (2015), Bloomberg New Contemporary (2015), and Saatchi Gallery New Sensation (2012), as well as received an award of excellence at the 33rd Central Art Exhibition (2011). Her works are included in the collections of the Institute of Contemporary Art, Miami, HSBC London, Hyundai Capital, JoongAng Ilbo, Sarabande: The Lee Alexander McQueen Foundation, and Soho House Barcelona, among others. 

이진한은(b. 1982) 서울과 런던을 기반으로 활동하며 타국에서 경험한 언어적 소외감과 사랑하는 연인과의 이별, 체온을 통해 전달되는 친밀함 등 언어로 표현하기 어려운 사고와 감정을 특유의 추상과 구상을 넘나드는 생동감 있는 회화로 표현해 왔다. 2007년 런던으로 건너가 본격적인 작업 활동을 시작했고 15년간의 영국 생활을 마치고 귀국한 후현재까지 그는 개인과 언어, 문화, 각 작품 사이의 간극으로부터 회화만이 전달할 수 있는 ‘번역 불가능한(untranslatable)’ 순간을 화면에 포착해 왔다. 변주되는 모티프와 붓질에서 비롯된 생동감은 그의 작업 세계를 가로지르는 특징으로, 삶 그 자체와 같이 항상 생동하는 언어, 인간관계, 그리고 기억과 맞물려 움직인다. 

그의 작업 여정은 전통 회화의 주요 요소인 소실점을 중심으로 공간을 형성하는 르네상스적 화면에서 시작하여 2010년도를 기점으로 전통 회화의 원근법과 모더니즘 회화의 속성이 한 화면에 공존하는 이질적인 회화 공간으로 연결된다. 때로 추상적 풍경에 신조어, 한국 대중음악, 만화, 문학 등의 대중문화의 레퍼런스를 결합한다. 나아가 2021년 레지던시에서의 가상현실(VR) 실험을 계기로 회화의 본질적 언어를 고민하며 바깥쪽으로 돌출하는 듯한, 동양 서예와 유사한 붓질이 3차원적 공간감을 형성하는 화면까지 형식적인 진화를 거듭해 왔다. 그가 구축하는 화면은 작가 내면의 실체를 거침없이 드러낸, 구체성을 담은 풍경이라 할 수 있다. 작가는 이 풍경에 가까워지기 위해 강렬한 붓 터치로 작업을 진행하는 사이사이, 캔버스를 지긋이 바라보는 시간을 갖는다.

이진한은 홍익대학교를 졸업하고 런던예술대학교 센트럴세인트마틴과 골드스미스대학에서 석사학위를 받았으며, 2021년 런던 UCL 슬레이드미술대학에서 박사학위를 마쳤다. 갤러리현대, 서울(2024), 유니온퍼시픽, 런던(2024), 스페이스이수, 서울(2023), 누크갤러리, 서울(2021), 비컨스필드갤러리, 런던(2021), 갤러리엠, 서울(2018), HADA컨템포러리갤러리, 런던(2012), 대안공간루프, 서울(2012) 등에서 개인전을 개최했다. 티에폴로파시궁, 베니스(2024), N/A, 서울(2024), 챕터뉴욕, 뉴욕(2024), 유니온퍼시픽, 런던(2023), BB&M, 서울(2022), 스페이스K, 과천(2018) 등 다수의 기획전에도 참여했다. 비컨스필드(2021), 윈저앤뉴튼 엘리펀트 랩(2019), 더 리 알렉산더 맥퀸 재단 레지던시(2015), 블룸버그 뉴컨템포러리(2015), 사치 갤러리 뉴센세이션(2012) 선정 작가이며, 제33회 중앙미술대전(2011)에서 우수상을 수상했다. 현대캐피탈, 중앙일보, 사라방드–더 리 알렉산더 맥퀸 파운데이션, 바르셀로나 소호하우스 등에 작품이 소장되어 있다.
